MTV’s awards shows are typically headline-grabbing affairs, and this year’s European Music Awards ceremony was no exception.

The event, held this past Sunday (Nov 6) at Belfast’s Odyssey Arena, maintained MTV’s rep for tacky publicity stunts, dodgy comedy skits and manufactured drama. Unsurprisingly, most of the night’s news revolved around big winner Lady Gaga, who gave a characteristically weird performance of her new single Marry The Night chained to a model of the moon, as you do. Here’s a selection of this week’s stories regarding the winners, the onstage drama and the backstage gossip.

The Mirror claimed that Gaga was furious at EMA host Selena Gomez: “When she wore a pink poodle wig on her head which appeared to mock Gaga’s famously odd headgear, it didn’t go down well”. The wacky singer allegedly took offense to the jibe, and wouldn’t allow Gomez anywhere near her backstage. Sugarscape reported there was a lot of “effing and blinding” on Gaga’s behalf.

MTV have reported on Lady Gaga’s dressing room demands: “She wanted her backstage area stocked with pureed baby food”. The star, winner of four EMA gongs, is sticking to a rigid diet that’s “healthy, but just sounds weird when she demands it in her dressing room”. Katy Perry opted for a less nutritious stock of “champagne, red wine and whiskey”.

The Daily Mail provided the deets on this year’s Bruno-style publicity stunt: “[Hayden Panettiere] was about to present the award for Best Song…when a naked man appeared on stage who we can exclusively reveal is David Monahan”. The Mail provides a description of the couple’s awkward conversation as well as several lovely pictures of the naked culprit’s pasty bum.

Hello Magazine reported on the Katy Perry pregnancy rumours following her appearance at the event with a “rounded tummy”: “The singer has recently denied the reports, speaking of her love of baked beans as the reason for her ‘bloated’ aspect”. Perry displayed her unique sense of humour by wearing a beans-on-toast ring to combat the rumours.

In what is arguably the most eyebrow-raising rumour of the night, The Sun claimed Justin Bieber celebrated his EMA win at a Belfast gay club: “Justin Bieber knocked back allegations he’s the father of a lovechild…by choosing to spend the early hours of Monday morning in gay club Kremlin”. Apparently, Bieber was smuggled out of the official MTV after-party in secret before heading to the club. Interesting.

MTV have published a list of the night’s winners: “After a spectacular night in Belfast, the 2011 MTV EMAs are over for another year, leaving behind some great memories and a host of stars clutching their gongs”. Lady Gaga was the recipient of the most, and biggest, awards: Best Female, Biggest Fans, and Best Song and Best Video for ‘Born This Way’. Justin Bieber scooped Best Pop, Katy Perry received Best Live, while Bruno Mars accepted two for Best New and Best Push. Adele predictably won Best UK Act.
